MIDFIELD, Alabama — A Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy was en route to the hospital after he was beaten by a suspect Tuesday morning.
The attack happened just after 11 a.m. at a home in the 300 block of Bessemer Super Highway in Midfield. Authorities said they received a CrimeStoppers tip about a wanted sex offender and deputies went to arrest him on a felony warrant, according to the sheriff’s office.
“Once inside, the deputies were confronted by a 19-year-old male who knocked a deputy to the floor causing an injury to his head. The wanted person originally sought by deputies was not home,” said Chief Deputy Randy Christian.
The suspect is in custody. His name was not released because charges are pending.
The deputy was left with a bloodied face and head, but was able to walk to an ambulance that carried him to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
“We are thanking God our deputy is going to be OK,” said Christian. “This is dangerous work. I guess the bad guys don’t know we are honoring law enforcement this week.”
